Changes in Your Senior Pet

As your pet begins to move past vigorous youth and healthy adulthood to dignified senior, your pet care plan will change. When should you think of your pet as a senior? Life span will vary with each individual, and we will help you determine your pet’s stage of life. Remember that, like people, pet aging varies depending on size, breed, health care, and lifestyle. Your regular pet wellness exam is the most important step you can take in providing preventive senior care for your pet, as well as early detection of many diseases associated with mature pets.

We will conduct an extensive senior exam, including an evaluation of bodily functions and organs; skin and coat; eyes, ears, and teeth; and diagnostic laboratory work pertinent to your animal. During the senior health exam, we will discuss with you any changes in your pet’s activity, appearance, and behaviour. Some things we talk about at this veterinary exam are:

  • Sensory changes—responses to stimuli
  • Cognitive and behaviour changes—comprehension and memory
  • Physical changes—general deterioration and health
  • Bodily function changes—inappropriate elimination
  • Pet nutrition—feeding changes and weight control
  • Exercise—recommendations for geriatric pets

Our senior wellness plan is tailored to your pet and your family lifestyle. While regular pet check-ups are important, please monitor your pet’s behavior and physical condition between visits, and report anything unusual. It may be helpful to review the information on wellness in this section for general wellness information for all ages. At Green Lane Animal Hospital, we strive to help your pet—and you!—enjoy those senior years.
