What exactly is arthritis?
Arthritis is a musculoskeletal condition that causes pain in your pet’s joints. It all starts with the cartilage; a connective tissue that protects your pet’s bones from touching. When the cartilage between their joints starts to deteriorate, it causes their bones to rub together. This creates an intense friction that makes walking, jumping and weight on their body difficult to manage.
How do you know my pet has arthritis?
We detect arthritis in your pet through non-invasive examinations. We can inspect their body for pain or we can use diagnostic tools, such as an X-ray, to look for signs of arthritis. When we feel your pet’s body, we’re searching for areas sensitive to touch. Sometimes animals are aggressive or resistant when they are handled in a way that aggravates their arthritis. It helps if pet owners share any changes they’ve noticed in their pet’s behaviour. With X-rays we can spot abnormalities around the afflicted area. The friction from their bones rubbing together can cause inflammation and small growths to develop around the joint.
